Ileys Community Association(CA) celebrates after receiving £224k from the National Lottery to help local families and young people.
Local community group, Ileys CA, is today celebrating after being awarded £224k in National Lottery funding to support its work with families and young people. The group, based in Smethwick, Sandwell, will use the cash to increase its work & support of local families. Ileys CA has been running since 2007 and is staffed primarily by 12 volunteers. It was founded by members of the local Somali community after members of their community were struggling to get the support they needed to deal with some challenges they were facing.
The group operates from Victoria Park Skill Centre, where it offers a wide range of support and activities, ranging from Information, Advice & Guidance, education classes, Keep Fit and youth activities. The activities bring together a wide range of people from the local community. A key focus of the work Ileys CA does, is about building self-
confidence, self reliance, and greater community cohesion.
The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest funder of community activity in the UK.
At the same time, Ileys CA will be able to progress its work supporting local families, through developing two key strands of work:
1) Whole Family Matters – through focused activity targeted at both parents & children, to support parents to build confidence in their parenting skills and strengthen family bonds whilst reducing barriers towards engaging with services such as schools, criminal justice agencies etc. Whilst activities for young people will address issues of
feeling they have a place and role to play within the family as well as wider community. Both elements will aim to increase self confidence and esteem with a focus on developing and upskilling people with the aim of improving outcomes for the whole community through giving back.
2) Community Enablement – This will focus on developing the capacity and sustainability of Ileys Community Association, to address a range of needs in its local and surrounding area. Through the development of a structured volunteering programme, developing enterprise opportunities and maximising the potential of our centre, thereby creating greater self-sustainable.
Abdul Ali, Ileys CA Chairman, says: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to press on with our work with local families and their children. This is important because it helps both the children and the parents to build relationships with others
facing similar challenges and to create their own supportive circles of friends and peers.
